Louisiana's Medical Marijuana Program Works Differently
Louisiana's program is unique. There is no state patient registry โ patients don't need to apply for or carry a medical marijuana ID card. Cannabis is dispensed through licensed therapeutic marijuana pharmacies staffed by Louisiana-licensed pharmacists, not traditional dispensaries. Your physician's recommendation is sent directly to the pharmacy of your choice and serves as your medical cannabis credential.
How to Get a Medical Marijuana Recommendation in Louisiana
Louisiana's program adds a clinical pharmacy layer that's unusual among medical cannabis states. The good news: this means fewer steps for patients than most other states โ no state registration form, no waiting for an ID card.

About Louisiana's Therapeutic Marijuana Program
Louisiana legalized medical cannabis through Act 261 in 2015, establishing one of the more unique programs in the country by leveraging the state's existing pharmacy infrastructure. The program is governed by La. R.S. 40:1046 and is administered by the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) Cannabis Program, which took over retail oversight from the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy in January 2025 under Act 693.
Major program updates include Act 286 (2020), which authorized any Louisiana-licensed physician in good standing with the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners to recommend cannabis for any condition deemed debilitating, and the 2022 expansion that legalized smokable flower. The program now serves a growing patient population and has become one of the more accessible medical cannabis programs in the South.
Available product forms include flower, oils, tinctures, capsules, edibles, topicals, transdermal patches, and metered-dose inhalers. Possession limits are 2.5 ounces of flower per 14-day period or a 30-day supply of processed products.

Louisiana Medical Marijuana โ Common Questions
How is Louisiana's medical marijuana program different?
No state patient registry. No patient ID card. Cannabis is dispensed through licensed therapeutic marijuana pharmacies (not traditional dispensaries) staffed by Louisiana-licensed pharmacists with specialized cannabis training. Your physician's recommendation goes directly to the pharmacy of your choice and serves as your medical cannabis credential.
How long is the appointment call?
Typically 5-15 minutes. Our physicians won't rush you โ we want to make sure cannabis is safe and appropriate for your condition.
How long is my Louisiana recommendation valid?
One year from issuance. You'll need an annual renewal visit with a Louisiana-licensed physician to keep your recommendation active.
What if I miss the physician's call?
Your physician will try again and may text. Calls sometimes show as "Unknown" or "Spam Risk." If we can't reach you, our office will follow up to reschedule.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
Most Louisiana patients can book a same-week appointment, often within 1-3 days. Evening and weekend windows are available.
What products are available at Louisiana pharmacies?
Louisiana's program offers flower (legalized in 2022), oils, tinctures, capsules, edibles, topicals, transdermal patches, and metered-dose inhalers. The pharmacy will help you choose products based on your condition and your physician's recommendation. Possession is limited to 2.5 ounces of flower per 14-day period or a 30-day supply of processed products.
Can out-of-state patients buy from Louisiana pharmacies?
Yes โ under HB 135, Louisiana's therapeutic marijuana pharmacies can dispense to qualifying out-of-state patients with valid medical cannabis credentials from their home state, subject to certain requirements.
Do you certify in other states besides Louisiana?
