Medical Marijuana Card FAQs
Plain-language answers about getting certified by telehealth — across 10 states. Cost, qualifying conditions, renewals, privacy, and more.
Green Bridge Society is a multi-state advocate-owned medical cannabis practice founded in 2018. Our doctors provide medical marijuana certifications and renewals by telehealth so you can complete the process from home. Over 100,000 patients certified to date.
We currently certify patients in ten states: Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Maine.
We also offer pharmacist consultations to help you understand products, dosing, and building a safe regimen.
The process is simple and similar in every state:
- Register or complete our online form. Choose your state and complete the short intake form.
- Doctor telehealth call. A licensed practitioner calls you during the time window you select. They review your history and determine if you qualify.
- Certification is issued. If you qualify, the doctor submits your certification in your state's system or issues a written certification/letter (for states like Virginia).
- Finish the state step (if required). Some states require you to log into a portal, pay a fee, or print a card. We walk you through it.
- Shop at dispensaries. Once your certification and state steps are complete, you can visit licensed dispensaries.
If you need help with the state portal or lost-card issues, visit our Help & Tech Support page.
Pennsylvania uses a three-step process:
- Register on the PA Medical Marijuana Program portal at the PA Department of Health. You'll need a valid PA ID or driver's license.
- Get certified by an approved physician — that's where Green Bridge Society comes in. A doctor reviews your history by telehealth and submits your certification through the state portal.
- Pay PA's $50 ID card fee directly to the state. Once paid, your card is mailed to you, usually within 1-2 weeks.
Most patients are certified the same day they call us. See full PA details and pricing.
Every appointment is done by telehealth — typically by phone, sometimes by video where state law requires it. You'll never need to visit our office. Our address in Tyrone, PA is for staff and operations, not patient visits.
You can complete your visit from home, work, or anywhere private and quiet. All we ask:
- Answer from a quiet place where you can talk openly
- Have your ID nearby
- Be prepared to discuss your medical history and current medications
Most visits take about 5–15 minutes, depending on how complex your history is and how many questions you have.
The visit is not rushed, but we also don't waste your time. Our doctors focus on:
- Your main symptoms and diagnoses
- Past treatments you have tried
- Whether cannabis is appropriate and safe
- Basic guidance on how to get started
Please watch your phone closely during your chosen call window. The call may show as "Unknown" or "Spam Likely" depending on your carrier.
If you miss the call:
- The doctor may try you again once during the same window.
- Our office will follow up to reschedule, usually the next business day.
We don't charge no-show fees for first-time misses. Just call us back — we want to help.
Many of our patients have never tried cannabis before they get certified. Our doctors and pharmacist are used to helping new patients start carefully.
The general approach for new patients is "start low and go slow":
- Begin with a low-dose product (often a tincture, low-THC capsule, or balanced CBD/THC)
- Try a small amount, wait the full onset time, then assess
- Adjust gradually over days and weeks, not hours
If you'd like personalized guidance, we offer pharmacist consultations — our staff pharmacist can help you build a starting regimen and choose appropriate products.
Our pricing is simple and transparent. No hidden fees, no upsells, no recurring subscriptions. Here's our doctor fee by state:
Some states also charge a separate state ID card fee (e.g., PA charges $50) that goes directly to the state, not to us. See your state page for the full breakdown.
No gimmicks · No recurring fees
No. Health insurance does not cover medical marijuana certifications, state fees, or cannabis products in any of the states we serve. Federal law keeps cannabis off insurance entirely.
Other payment options:
- HSA / FSA cards — these often work, depending on your plan administrator. Check with your plan if uncertain.
- Credit and debit cards — accepted
- MMAP (Pennsylvania) — see the next question
MMAP is Pennsylvania's Medical Marijuana Assistance Program. It lowers the state ID card fee for patients enrolled in:
- Medicaid
- PACE / PACENET
- CHIP
- SNAP (food stamps)
- WIC
If you're enrolled in any of these, you qualify. Green Bridge Society is a participating MMAP provider — we'll handle the paperwork on our end. See full MMAP details.
Other states have their own assistance programs. Ask us when you call if your state offers one.
Policies can vary slightly based on state rules and partner dispensary agreements, but in general:
- You can reschedule your appointment if you give reasonable notice — we don't charge no-show fees for first-time misses.
- If the doctor cannot certify you, we may offer a partial or adjusted refund in some situations.
- Repeated missed calls without any response may be subject to a rebooking fee.
For the most accurate information, review the policy on your state's scheduling page or contact our office before booking.

If you have records showing any of these, you're almost certainly approvable. Not sure? Call 814-360-5353 and we'll let you know honestly before you pay anything.
Medical records are helpful but not always required before your visit.
In many cases, your doctor can rely on:
- Your description of your diagnosis and symptoms
- Medications you are currently taking
- Prior treatments you have tried
However, for certain conditions or more complex histories, we may ask for documentation. If records are needed, our team will let you know how to send them securely. Acceptable records include pharmacy printouts, recent doctor visit notes, ER discharge papers, or specialist letters.
Yes — many of our patients are veterans, and PTSD is one of the most common qualifying conditions across the states we serve. Cannabis is increasingly used as part of mental health and chronic pain management for vets.
A few things to know:
- The VA itself cannot certify you for state medical cannabis programs (federal law). You need a state-licensed practitioner — that's where we come in.
- Your VA care will not be revoked or affected by getting a state medical cannabis card. The VA officially supports veterans discussing cannabis with their VA providers.
- VA records can be used as documentation for our certification visit.
Yes, and seniors are one of the fastest-growing groups in our practice. Common reasons older adults pursue certification include sleep difficulties, chronic pain, arthritis, neuropathy, and reducing reliance on opioids.
For seniors, we generally recommend:
- Lower starting doses than younger adults
- Tinctures, capsules, or low-dose edibles rather than smoking
- Careful interaction review with current medications (blood thinners, blood pressure meds, sedatives, etc.)
Our pharmacist consultation is especially valuable for seniors with multiple medications.
Yes, most states allow registered caregivers to purchase and possess medical cannabis on behalf of qualifying patients who can't easily do so themselves — for example, a parent caring for a minor patient, or an adult child caring for an aging parent.
Caregiver requirements vary by state but typically include:
- Background check
- Patient designation (the patient must list you on their state record)
- Separate state caregiver fee
Call us at 814-360-5353 and we'll walk through the caregiver process for your specific state.
Most states require renewal every 12 months, although some have slightly different timelines.
We recommend scheduling renewals 30–60 days before your current certification expires so there is no gap in access.
We send reminders by email and/or text, but ultimately it is your responsibility to renew on time. If you're unsure of your expiration date, contact our office at 814-360-5353.
Yes. One of the things that makes Green Bridge Society different is that we actively help patients with the state side of the process — not just the doctor visit.
We can often help with:
- Logging into your state portal
- Resetting usernames and passwords
- Updating your mailing address
- Confirming that your certification is active
- Understanding what step comes next
Start with our Help & State Portal Support page. If you still need assistance, reach out to our office.
In Virginia, the key requirement is a valid written certification from a registered practitioner. With that certification and a valid ID, you can purchase medical cannabis at licensed dispensaries.
A separate state-issued card is optional. Some patients still choose to register with the state for an ID card, but it is not required for in-state purchases under current rules.
Your Green Bridge Society practitioner will issue the proper Virginia certification letter and give you instructions on how to use it at dispensaries.
Don't panic — replacement cards are usually straightforward:
- Pennsylvania: Log into the patient portal and request a replacement (small fee applies). Many dispensaries also accept your digital card on the portal in the meantime.
- Other states: Most have similar online replacement processes. Some states accept a digital card displayed on your phone.
Need help navigating the portal? Visit our Help page or call us — we can walk you through it.
Sometimes, but it's complicated. Reciprocity rules vary widely:
- Some states recognize out-of-state cards for purchases (e.g., Maine, Oklahoma for short-term visitors).
- Some states only allow possession with an out-of-state card but not purchase.
- Some states do not recognize out-of-state cards at all.
- Pennsylvania does not generally allow out-of-state patients to purchase from PA dispensaries.
If you split time between two of our states (e.g., PA and FL or NY and PA), it's often worth getting certified in both. Call us if you need state-by-state guidance.
Generally, you certify in the state where you are physically located and have valid ID at the time of your appointment. For students:
- If you have an in-state ID for your school's state, you can certify there.
- If you only have ID from your home state, you typically need to certify in that state.
- Most states allow you to use a temporary address (e.g., dorm or apartment) for the patient registration once you have valid in-state ID.
Reach out and we'll help you figure out the best approach for your situation.
Cannabis is a real medication and can interact with other drugs. During your visit, the doctor will review your medication list and any major safety concerns.
For more detailed regimen planning and drug interaction review, you can schedule a pharmacist consultation. Our pharmacist can help with:
- Drug–drug interaction checks
- Planning a starting regimen
- Choosing products (flower, vape, edibles, tinctures, topicals)
- Adjusting doses safely over time
Certifying doctors and our pharmacist work together, but your regular doctors should also be kept in the loop whenever possible.
Patient information is protected by HIPAA and by your state's medical marijuana program privacy rules. We don't share patient data with employers, insurance companies, or anyone else outside what state law specifically requires.
Your state ID card is also private — it's not a public record and doesn't appear in background checks performed by typical employers.
Important caveat: medical cannabis use does not currently override workplace drug-testing policies in most states. Some states (like Pennsylvania) have employee protections; others don't. If you're worried about a specific job, talk with HR or an employment attorney before getting certified.
This is one of the most-asked questions, and the honest answer is: it's a real legal gray area.
Under federal law, the ATF currently treats any cannabis user — including state-legal medical patients — as a "prohibited person" for firearm purchases. Form 4473 asks about marijuana use directly. Lying on it is a felony.
Under state law, several states have explicitly protected medical cannabis patients' gun rights for already-owned firearms (Pennsylvania has limited protections; rulings vary).
This is an evolving area with active court cases. We strongly recommend reading our full Gun Rights guide and consulting a qualified attorney before making decisions if firearm ownership is important to you.
Never drive while impaired by cannabis. DUI laws apply equally to medical patients in every state we serve. Having a medical card does not protect you from a DUI charge.
Practical guidance:
- Wait at least 4–6 hours after inhaled cannabis before driving
- Wait 8+ hours after edibles or higher doses
- Cannabis can stay detectable in blood/urine for days to weeks, but impairment typically resolves within hours — laws differ on what counts
- Some states have zero-tolerance THC blood limits; others use impairment-based standards
When in doubt, don't drive. Use a rideshare or have a designated driver.
Yes — for several practical reasons, even after recreational legalization:
- Lower taxes. Medical cannabis is taxed less than adult-use in every state where both exist.
- Higher possession limits. Medical patients can typically possess more product at one time.
- Higher potency products. Medical programs often have stronger flower, concentrates, and edibles than recreational.
- Workplace and legal protections. Some state employment protections only apply to medical patients.
- Younger adults (18-20). Adult-use is typically 21+; medical programs serve 18+ (with caregiver options below 18).
- Earlier access. Medical programs are running now; adult-use sales in PA haven't started.

Yes, in every state we serve. All ten state programs we operate in — Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Maine — allow telehealth certifications.
Each state has specific rules about how telehealth visits must be conducted (some require video, some allow phone-only, some have rules about doctor-patient relationship establishment). Our doctors are individually licensed in each state where they certify patients and follow those state-specific rules carefully.
Once you're certified, you can shop at any licensed dispensary in your state. To find one:
- Use our Find a Dispensary tool
- Check your state's official program website for the licensed dispensary list
- Apps like Leafly and Weedmaps show real-time inventory
We also have partner dispensaries in several states that offer Green Bridge Society patients special pricing on their first visit. Ask during your appointment which partners are near you.
First-time dispensary visits can feel overwhelming. Here's what to expect:
- Bring your ID and your medical card (or digital card on your phone)
- You'll check in at the front desk — they'll verify your card before you go in
- You'll meet a "budtender" — a staff member who walks you through products, helps you understand strains, formats, and dosing
- Bring cash if possible — many dispensaries are cash-only or charge debit fees
- Take notes on what you buy. It helps you figure out what works over time.
Don't feel rushed. A good budtender will take time with new patients. If you want extra guidance, our pharmacist consultation can prep you with a personalized list before you go.
Different formats have different onset times, durations, and use cases:
- Flower (vaped, not smoked): Onset 5-15 min, lasts 2-4 hours. Good for breakthrough symptoms.
- Vape pens / cartridges: Similar to flower, more convenient and discreet.
- Edibles: Onset 30-90 min, lasts 4-8 hours. Good for sustained relief; easy to overdo.
- Tinctures (sublingual drops): Onset 15-45 min, lasts 4-6 hours. Most precise dosing.
- Capsules: Like edibles but consistent doses.
- Topicals (creams, balms): Localized relief without intoxication. Good for joint pain.
For an in-depth product guide, see our Understanding Dispensary Products page or read our Learn Not to Burn guide on why vaporizing beats smoking.
A pharmacist consultation is a separate, optional appointment with our staff pharmacist. It's especially useful for:
- Patients on multiple medications who want a thorough interaction review
- New cannabis users who want a personalized starting regimen
- Patients struggling with side effects or unsure if they're "doing it right"
- Seniors or anyone with complex medical history
It's not required for certification — but many patients find it the difference between trial-and-error and getting good results quickly. Learn more about pharmacist consultations.
